NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's volleyball team begins a two-match home stand on Tuesday night when the Warriors host Northeast-10 Conference foe Stonehill at 7 p.m. from Hammel Court.
The Basics
Date/Time: 10/13 | 7 p.m.
Records: Merrimack (6-9, 1-3 NE-10) | Stonehill (7-9, 2-4 NE-10)
Location: Hammel Court | North Andover, Mass.
Last Time Out:
Merrimack dropped a road NE-10 contest over the weekend, 3-0, against the University of New Haven Saturday afternoon.
The Chargers, the defending regional champions, won the first set coast-to-coast before the Warriors battled back to control the majority of the middle frame. A late kill from junior Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) gave the Navy and Gold a 20-18 advantage, but New Haven ended the set on a 7-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After averaging over four kills per set last week including a 17-kill performance against Saint Anselm, Cain now leads Merrimack with 3.27 kills per set, which is good for third in the conference. She now needs just 17 more kills to set a new career high for kills in a season (174). If she continues at her current pace, Cain will set new personal bests in kills, kills per set, digs and digs per set.
Junior setter Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) ranks among the top-three in the conference in assists per set (9.79). She eclipsed the 500-assist plateau for the year against the Chargers and fell one dig shy of her seventh her double-double of the season. Her current rate of 2.30 digs per set is the best of her three-year career.
Senior captain Madison Burke (San Jose, Calif.) had a nine-match streak of at least 10 digs snapped against New Haven, but still ranks sixth in the league with 5.15 digs per set. Junior Juliette McCall (Torrance, Calif.) continues her breakout season after 18 kills over the weekend. With 140 kills through 15 matches, McCall is close to doubling her previous personal best for kills in a season.
Last Season vs. Stonehill:
The Warriors lost to a strong Skyhawks squad, 3-0, last season as Stonehill picked up its 18th win through 22 matches.
Stuhr led the way with 22 assists for the Navy and Gold. Senior Hannah Pavlik (Monument, Colo.) finished second on the team with nine digs.
The Skyhawks:
- Stonehill sits just above Merrimack in the conference standings with a 2-4 league record. The Skyhawks enter Tuesday with back-to-back losses against Bentley and Adelphi
- Four Stonehill players average over two kills per set, led by sophomore Marykay Nasby (2.67). Sophomore libero Claire Manuszak paces the team with 4.27 digs per set
- Junior Taylor Stephens' 8.49 assists per set leads the team. Sophomore middle blocker ranks four in the conference with 1.02 block per set
Up Next
The Warriors return to Hammel Court to welcome Southern N.H. to campus for a 7 p.m. tilt. The Navy and Gold prevailed over the Penmen, 3-2, in non-conference action earlier this season.
