How It Happened
With four courts available indoors, the quarterfinal contest began with all three doubles and sixth singles competing.

The Warriors jumped out to leads at second and third doubles as senior captain Chealsey Giatrelis (Centerville, Mass.) and sophomore Danielle Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) won five of seven games to take a 5-2 advantage at No. 2. At No. 3, freshmen Celine Mende (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Lauren Persson (Barnstable, Mass.) led by the same score before prevailing in the final three games and give Merrimack a 1-0 lead in the match.

Giatrelis and Dunn followed suit by winning by the an 8-3 score to put the Navy and Gold up 2-0. At first doubles, junior Grace Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and freshman Mana Seifaei (North York, Ontario) fell behind by a game, 4-3, before winning four games in a row to build a 7-4 advantage. Assumption answered by winning the next two games to cut the deficit to one, but the Warriors duo answered to win, 8-6, and enter singles play with a 3-0 lead.

Messina dispatched her opponent at No. 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. The three-time NE-10 Player of the Year has now won all six of her career matches in the postseason.

Giatrelis wrapped things up with a straight-set victory at second singles. After trailing early on in the first set, the senior captain rallied for a 7-5 victory. Leading 5-3 in the final frame, Giatrelis cemented the victory with a forehand winner. With the victory, the Navy and Gold advance to the conference semifinals for third straight season.
