How It Happened
With Adelphi leading in the opening set, 5-4, the Warriors used a kill from sophomore Mary Kate McCarroll (Harrison, Ohio) to start a 4-1 run and take an 8-6 lead. Later on with the Panthers leading by two points, Adelphi rattled off four straight to build a 19-13 advantage. Adelphi had three cracks at a set point before winning it, 25-19, on a service error by Merrimack.
The Panthers, who came into the day undefeated in league play, jumped ahead of the Warriors in second set by winning 13 of the first 14 points. Kills from Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.) and McCarroll late in the frame contributed to a 6-1 run for the Navy and Gold, but Panthers held on to take a 2-0 lead into the final set.
Merrimack hung with Adelphi in the third set, as the sides exchanged points throughout. Adelphi's lead hovered around three points for the majority of the time, including at 21-18 following a kill from Cain. At that point, the Panthers won three unanswered points to pull away and win the match.
