How It Happened
The Warriors took on the Buccaneers just two days ago, with Barry coming away with the 21-11 victory. Junior lefthander Zach Schindler (Kingston, Mass.) took the bump for the Warriors this time around, making his first start and appearance of the season.
Schindler go through the first inning scoreless, but ran into trouble starting in the bottom of the second. The southpaw allowed two baserunners before a Khalil Denson three-run bomb out of the park put the first runs on the board for the Buccaneers. That was only the beginning of Schindler's problem with the long ball. In the bottom of the third, Barry smacked another three-run shot out of Feinbloom Field, and in the fourth another three-run homer gave the Bucs an 11-2 advantage.
The hosts weren't the only squad getting their offense by way of the long ball. With Barry up 7-0, designated hitter Matt Brown (Belmont, Mass.) sent one over the left-field fence, scoring Sean O'Neill (Norwood, Mass.), and the Warriors had their first runs of the Brown. The round trip for Brown was his first homer of the season and his third career home run.
The Navy and Gold had a couple more runners come home in the top of the sixth. An O'Neill RBI double down the right-field line scored Bobby Losanno (Peabody, Mass.). Brown, the next batter, grounded out which allowed Frank Crinella (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to score. Crinella advanced to third on the two-bagger from O'Neill. Catcher Dionys Quezada (Lawrence, Mass.) flied out to end the frame.
Freshman Anthony Lupi (Dover, N.H.) made his Merrimack debut, recording the final out of the fourth inning. The rookie was impressive, pitching two scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth. Barry finally got to the Merrimack newcomer for three runs in the seventh. Neither team would score the rest of the way, with the Warriors falling by a score of 14-4. Schindler recorded his first loss of the season.
Inside The Numbers
- Amazingly, Merrimack scored four runs on only five hits. Brown and O'Neill had two base knocks each, while freshman Mike Hoalcraft (Fayetteville, N.Y.) picked up a pinch-hit ninth-inning singles to pick up the Warriors' final hit
- Lupi came into the game and provided stability for the Warriors out of the pen. With a doubleheader Friday and important regional games against Southern New Hampshire looming on Monday, the Dover native pitched the final 4.1 innings of the game. He struck out four batters, while allowing six hits and three runs
- Brown took a trot around the bases for the first time in his last 206 at-bats. His last home run came midway through his freshman season, and had 128 plate appearances last season without sending one over the fences
- The defense hampered the Warriors again, as the Navy and Gold committed three errors. Merrimack has 16 errors over its last four games
Up Next
Merrimack will ride north to Raleigh, N.C. where the Warriors will battle St. Augustine's in non-conference action in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
