Men's Tennis Drops 9-0 Decision to #4 Concordia

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Merrimack College men's tennis team played in another non-conference match with one of the top teams in the region and the country on Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors lost to fourth-ranked Concordia College (N.Y.), 9-0, from Brookville, N.Y.

How It Happened
The Navy and Gold not only battled the fourth-ranked team in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), but the best squad in the East Region as the Clippers of Concordia College played host to the Warriors in a battle of two of the top programs in the region over the past five years.

In doubles play, the Clippers sailed to a 3-0 advantage. The combinations of Steven Francis (Perth, Australia)/Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) and Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela)/Vince Bellino (Amesbury, Mass.) lost at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, by the same score of 8-3. Sophomore Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) lost at No. 3, 8-1.

Singles play did not fare much better for the Warriors. The Clippers won all six matches in straight sets. Bellino played a strong opening set a No. 4 before losing 6-4 and then dropped the final set, 6-0. Francis lost at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-2, while Belov succumbed at No. 2 by a final score of 6-3 and 6-2.
