How It Happened
Sophomore Victoria Carter (Smithfield, R.I.) kept her hot start to the 2015 season rolling as she netted her third goal in two games to put Merrimack on the board in the 12th minute of the game off an assist from senior forward Jenna Savi (Dedham, Mass.).
Molloy would respond 15 minutes later in the first half when sophomore Felicia LaPera would score the last goal this game would see off a header that just snuck in to the lower left corner of the net.
The Warriors came out aggressively after halftime looking for the win. Merrimack lit up Molloy's junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Batista in the second half, outshooting Molloy 6-1 and forcing Batista to make some great saves, but was unable to put a second goal on the board.
The pressure from Merrimack did not let up as the teams went to overtime. Fresh off her first career game that featured her first career point, freshman Gigi Guenther (Webster, Mass.) came out in overtime looking for her first career goal, firing off two consecutive shots early that forced quality saves. As the first overtime wound down she would again just miss netting the game winner, firing another great shot that hit the crossbar.
Savi did everything she could as well to try and secure the win, ripping six shots throughout the game including two in overtime that almost found the back of the net. Sophomore Andrea Rego (Dartmouth, Mass.) missed on a scoring opportunity early in the second overtime, and it would be the Warriors final shot of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Meghan Gulbrandsen (Haverhill, Mass.) got the start in net for the Warriors, allowing the one goal and making one save on five shots faced. Much like the first game, head coach Gabe Mejail switched up the keepers at halftime. Sophomore Molly Meehan (Fairfield, Conn.) would play the second half and both overtimes, making four saves and allowing no goals on five shots faced and notching the tie to her record.
Inside The Numbers
- Carter's three goals in the first two games have her tied for the Northeast-10 Conference lead to start 2015
- The Warriors were the team pressing the issue offensively for the majority of the game, outshooting Molloy 21-10 throughout, including a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal
- Jenna Savi and Gigi Guenther each put four shots on goal, just two behind the shots on goal total of the entire Molloy squad
- A tie for the Navy and Gold in just their second game of the 2015 season already puts them halfway to their total ties from last year when they finished with two
