How It Happened
- 15' – The Warriors nearly jumped out to an early 1-0 about a third of the way into the first half on a shot from deep from junior Emily Maier (Mesa, Ariz.). On an offensive break with a two other Warriors, Maier would find herself with some open territory as he defenders cut off passing lanes. The junior would rip a shot from 20 yards out that made it over the keepers rech, but just went wide of sneaking inside the far post.
- 31' – Merrimack again looked as though it would take a lead on their third corner kick of the game. Junior Sarah Boucher (Northbridge, Mass.) would track the feed from the corner and look to head it into the net, but the redirect would go wide of the net.
- 41' – Just two minutes after her near header goal, Boucher would get another chance on a break up the middle of the field. She would fire a hard shot right on net that was stopped, but left a juicy rebound right in front of the net. Senior Bianca Giacalone (Gloucester, Mass.) then got in a footrace with the keeper to the loose ball, but the keeper would barely beat her and save a goal.
- 57' – The Warriors' goal would come 12 minutes into the second half on their sixth corner kick of the contest. With nearly every player in Navy and Fold pushed forward, Maier would deliver a perfect corner to the near post. Heffernan would crouch and let the ball ricochet off her head and beat the keeper on the near side for first goal of the senior defender and captain's career.
- 79' – With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Southern Connecticut would tie the game up at 1-1. After an initial diving save from junior goalkeeper Molly Meehan (Fairfield, Conn.), the rebound would deflect right to the foot of a Southern Connecticut attacker, who rolled it into the back of the net for the tie.
