Two Late Goals Lead Women's Soccer Past Saint Anselm Sunday Afternoon, 2-0

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Led by two goals in the final 15 minutes and a career-high 11 saves in the first-career shutout for freshman goalkeeper Erin Fulton (Farmington, Conn.), the Merrimack College women's soccer team defeated Saint Anselm on Sunday morning by a score of 2-0 in Northeast-10 Conference action.

How It Happened

  • 8' – Junior Emily Maier (Mesa, Ariz.) would get Merrimack the first scoring chance of the game on Sunday morning. Maier would rip a high shot from 20 yards out from the left of the net and saw it hook towards the top left corner and clank of the crossbar. Senior Bianca Giacalone (Gloucester, Mass.) would follow on the rebound, but saw her chance stopped by the keeper.
  • 22' – One of the six first-half saves for freshman goalkeeper Erin Fulton (Farmington, Conn.) would come on a nice diving stop on a clos-range chance for Saint Anselm. After a Hawk attacker weaved their way into the box 10 yards out from the net, Fulton would have to lay out to stop a hard shot on the best chance of the first 45 minutes for Saint Anselm. The rookie's play would help Merrimack get into halftime in a scoreless tie.
  • 51' – The Warriors would get two great opportunities early in the second half that could have easily had them up 2-0. Junior Sarah Boucher (Northbridge, Mass.) to a unique approach to a header on her chance six minutes into the frame, as she would get in front of a shot on goal for Merrimack and redirect it with her head, nearly sending it by the keeper.
  • 54' – Just minutes later, Giacalone would find herself in all alone on a breakaway but would be denied by the keeper coming far out of her net to attack the ball as Giacalone approached.
  • 76' –Merrimack would finally get on the board in the latter half of the second, as sophomore McKenna Moore (Seattle, Wash.) would net the first of two goals in a three-minute span for the Warriors and her first of the season after splitting two Saint Anselm defenders in front of their own net to go one-on-one with the keeper. The sophomore would loft the ball perfectly by the keeper to give Merrimack the first lead of the game.
  • 79' – After needing 76 minutes to see the first goal of the game, the Warriors would add another just 2:58 after Moore's score for the insurance goal and a 2-0 lead. Junior Victoria Carter (Smithfield, R.I.) would net her team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Warriors a late two-goal lead on their way to a

Inside The Numbers

  • Fulton impressed on Sunday in just her second career start, especially in the first half. The freshman would tie her career-high for saves with six in the opening 45 minutes alone. She would finish with 11 saves in her first-career shutout.
  • Carter's fifth goal of the season improves her team-leading point total to 15 on the year. That number has her tied for 11th in the conference.
