How It Happened
- 1st set – The Hawks got off to a strong start, hitting .375 as a team during the opener. Merrimack was within two points, 10-8, following a kill from Catherine Flaherty (North Andover, Mass.), but Saint Anselm embarked on a 8-1 run from there to take an 18-9 advantage. A kill from team-leader Amanda Williams closed the set, 25-15
- 2nd set – As they have done the past three matches, the Warriors evened things up in the second set. Four kills from senior Jennifer Cain (Melrose, Mass.), junior Mary Kate McCarroll (Harrison, Ohio) and sophomore Katelynn Marr (Franklin, Mass.) contributed to a 5-1 run midway through the frame that build Merrimack's lead to six, 19-13. On the Warriors second opportunity at a set point, McCarroll clinched the game with a kill, 25-20
- 3rd set – It appeared the Navy and Gold would carry that momentum into a third-set win, as the Warriors won 10 of the first 15 points capped off by a point from Juliette McCall (Torrance, Calif.). The Hawks, however, won straight unanswered points and 14 of the next 18 to take control of the set. Merrimack did not go quietly, going on a 7-1 run to take the lead back, 21-20. Cain totaled a pair of kills and senior Tara Stuhr (Huntington Beach, Calif.) added a service ace during that stretch. Saint Anselm rallied to win five of the last seven points to pull ahead, 25-23
- 4th set – Another back-and-forth frame ensued in the fourth. On one of Stuhr's five kills on the night, the Warriors took a 10-9 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Merrimack's senior setter pushed the Navy and Gold's lead to three, 17-14, and prompted a Hawks timeout. Out of the stoppage, the visitors won seven of nine points to surge ahead, 21-19. Kills from McCall and Marr tied the set at 22-all, but the Hawks ended the night on a 3-0 spurt to claim the match
