UMass Pulls Away from Women's Basketball, 73-44; Werner Sets Program Record with Nine 3-Pointers

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard Lindsay Werner (Groton, Mass.) of the Merrimack College women's basketball team broke the program's single-game record for 3-pointers, draining nine of them on Sunday afternoon against the University of Massachusetts. Merrimack hung in with its Division I opponents in the first half, only trailing by 10, before the Minutemen pulled away in the second stanza for the victory, 73-44.

How It Happened
- Werner came off the bench to score the Warriors' first points on her first triple to make it a 4-3 deficit at the 6:43 mark. Hailey Leidel scored five unanswered after that for the Atlantic-10 representatives to make it a 9-3 game midway through the quarter
- The Groton native accounted for all of Merrimack's first-quarter scoring, netting two more triples as UMass held a 17-9 lead after 10 minutes
- Sophomore Lexi Martin (Franklin, Mass.) brought the Navy and Gold within six, 19-13, with her first field goal three minutes into the second quarter. Werner drained two more treys to keep Merrimack within striking distance, with the hosts using a last-second layup to take a 29-19 lead into halftime
- The Minutemen outscored the Warriors by 18 in the third frame to distance themselves from Merrimack. Senior forward Savannah Johnson (Palmdale, Calif.) scored the first points of the quarter, but UMass responded with a 16-0 run. Werner's sixth triple ended the stretch at the 3:49 mark, but the hosts entered the fourth with a 54-26 lead
- Freshman Emily Houle (Attleboro, Mass.) came off the bench in the fourth and made her first-ever triple. Werner answered a few minutes later with her record-tying shot, giving her 21 points for the afternoon
- At the 1:39 mark of the fourth, Werner pulled up to hit her eighth 3-pointer of the afternoon to break the school record of seven held by a pair of Warriors include recent graduate Chloe Rothman '15. The sharp-shooting sophomore finished the day with nine makes from beyond the arc
Inside The Numbers
- Werner stands all alone in the Warriors' record book, continuing her stellar start to the season. Rothman and Keri Guertin, Merrimack's all-time leader in assists, each hit seven in a game, with Rothman doing so two years ago
- More on Lindsay: She finished the day with 27 of Merrimack's 44 points, and all of her field goals came from 3-point land. The 27 points marked a new career high, notching her fourth consecutive double-digit scoring game.
- Houle first-ever 3-pointer marked her lone field goal in 10 minutes. Fellow rookie Denia Davis-Stewart (Dorchester, Mass.) continued to excel as a rim protector, collecting four blocks in 15 minutes
- The contest marked the program's seventh-ever game against a Division I opponent, and the first since the Navy and Gold defeated Stony Brook nearly two decades ago
