McGowan Leads the Way for Women's Swimming on Day 3 of the NE-10 Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's swimming team compiled a strong performance on Saturday during the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, as nine swimmers tallied a personal record during Day 3 action. Freshman standout Maeve McGowan (Mansfield, Mass.) advanced to the finals in an individual event for the second consecutive day, as she competed in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke on Saturday evening.

How It Happened
McGowan continued to showcase her tremendous talent and ability, as she finished seventh overall in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.94. McGowan's terrific performance in the event earned 12 team points for the Warriors. The Mansfield, Massachusetts, native placed eighth overall in the preliminaries of the 100-yard backstroke with a career-best time of 1:00.69.

Freshman Samantha Towle (Chalfont, Pa.) tallied a 19th-place finish in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle (career-best time of 2:01.91), while sophomore captain Kendra Van Pelt (Burlington, Iowa) recorded a personal record of 2:12.73 in the same event.

Senior captain Erin Lydon (Waltham, Mass.) and sophomore Julia Collins (North Reading, Mass.) registered strong performances, as the two posted personal records in the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle, with times of 2:16.11 and 2:17.11, respectively.

Sophomore Ireland Wilson (Niantic, Conn.) continues to improve in the 100-yard breaststroke, as she tallied a personal record of 1:17.71 in the preliminaries. Junior Sydney Frerichs (Andover, Mass.) posted a career-best time of 1:12.37 in the preliminaries of the 100-yard backstroke.

In the preliminaries of the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Alana Appel (Salt Lake City, Utah) and junior Coral Robinson (Methuen, Mass.) posted personal records, with times of 2:21.34 and 2:38.92, respectively. In the same event, sophomore Genesis Garcia (Lawrence, Mass.) tallied a time of 2:34.38.

Towle, Van Pelt, Wilson and McGowan competed together in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle relay, as the A team posted a time of 1:44.53 and earned 24 team points. The Warriors' B team also competed in the finals of the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Frerichs, Appel, Lydon and Collins worked together and posted a time of 1:56.85.
