CLERMONT, Mass. – The Merrimack College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with NYIT at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Saturday afternoon after a rain delay to conclude their games at the National Training Center. The Warriors have two more doubleheaders against Florida teams on Monday and Tuesday.

The Basics
Score (G1):
NYIT 10, Merrimack 1
Score (G2): NYIT 8, Merrimack 5
Records: Merrimack (5-10)
| NYIT (7-5)
Location:
National Training Center | Clermont, Fla.

How It Happened (G1)
NYIT would start the first game hot, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning to set Merrimack back early. The Warriors wouldn't be able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning, and in the top of the second the game would be postponed due to rain with Merrimack trailing NYIT, 3-0.

The game would pick back up three hours later, but the momentum in the game did not leave NYIT's side as they would hit a two-run homerun in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Merrimack would get a run back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly for junior captain Haley Currie (Burlington, Mass.), but it would be the only run the Warriors would manage.

NYIT would add another homerun in the fifth to put the score at 6-1, and a four-run sixth inning would extend their lead to nine runs at 10-1, ending the game an inning early as the mercy rule came into effect.

How It Happened (G2)
NYIT would take another early lead in game two of the day as they would plate two runners in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Megan Cook (Bellingham, Mass.) would drive in two runs in the top of the second to tie the game back up at two. Cook would also score the run to put Merrimack up 3-2 on a double steal in the inning.

Thriving off their power, NYIT would add another homerun in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at three. After another run from Merrimack in the tip of the fourth, NYIT would keep it going in the fourth inning, adding four  more runs to take a 7-4 lead.

An RBI from freshman Emily Kurkul (Bridgewater, Mass.) in the top of the fifth would cut Merrimack's deficit to two runs, but NYIT would again stretch the lead to three in the bottom of the sixth inning, putting the score at 8-5, where it would hold until the end of the game.
