How It Happened
The Warriors opened doubles play against the 26th-ranked program in the country with two of the same pairings from their match against Eckerd on Sunday, and a new combination at third doubles. Junior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and Laurence Akwei (Johannesburg, South Africa) lost at No. 1, 8-0. Sophomore Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) and freshman Tyler Clontz (Naples, Fla.) fell at No. 2 for the second straight day, 8-2.
Senior captain Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) returned to action after not playing on Sunday, competing with sophomore Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) at No. 3, losing by an 8-2 margin.
Merrimack dropped all six singles matches by straight-set decisions. Belov performed the best, winning five games in a 12-game first set before succumbing, 7-5. He won three games in the second frame, but was put away by Aaron Bettink, the sixth-ranked singles play in the South Region.
After sitting out doubles, freshman Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) battled at sixth singles, winning three games in his second set (6-0, 6-3).
