How It Happened
Merrimack switched up its doubles pairs again on Tuesday, with senior captain Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) playing up at No. 2 with Frank Vega (Lima, Peru), and Tyler Clontz (Naples, Fla.) joining Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) at third doubles.
Junior captain Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and Laurence Akwei (Johannesburg, South Africa) trotted out a No. 1, dropping an 8-3 match. Vega and Belfort brought their contest to a 16th game before the opposition pulled out a 9-7 victory. Belov and Clontz played together for the first time this season, winning five games in an 8-5 defeat.
Merrimack's singles lineup remained the same, with freshman Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) joining the group at sixth singles. Vega pulled out a straight-set victory at third singles, winning his first set, 7-5, before not dropping a game in his second.
Other than that, Akwei came the closest to winning a set, taking his second frame to a tiebreak. Belov and Vega each saw a set go to a 12th game, but neither were able to send each respective set to a tiebreak scenario.
