Women's Rowing Wins Fourth Consecutive NE-10 Cup

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's rowing team finished first overall in the Varsity Fours at the Northeast-10 Conference Cup on Saturday in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the Warriors won the event for the fourth straight season. The Navy and Gold led the way with 20 points in the three-team event, while Franklin Pierce collected 15 points and Assumption totaled 10 points.

The point totals included the Varsity Fours at the NE-10 Cup and the Varsity Eights at the UMass Lowell Invitational on April 16. The Warriors earned 12 points for tallying the best time out of the three teams in the Varsity Eights event, while collecting another eight points for their first-place finish in the Varsity Fours competition.

Head Coach David LeFebvre: "The Varsity Four had a strong piece and won by a commanding margin. They will likely be the No. 1 seed going into the New England Rowing Championships next weekend and this was a solid way to prepare. The Novice Four were able to learn a lot today and are looking forward to a second shot at both Franklin Pierce and Assumption next week at the NERC."

How It Happened
The Warriors were led in the Varsity Fours by their excellent lineup, which featured sophomore coxswain Jess Khoury (Bay Shore, N.Y.), senior captain and stroke Aubrey O'Neill (Pawcatuck, Conn.), senior third seat Lydia Staschke (Guilford, Conn.), junior second seat Lauren Blazon (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Tasha Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) on the bow.

The experienced group placed first overall with a time of 7:37.72, which cleared the second-place Franklin Pierce A boat by 22.1 seconds. The five girls have competed together in nine consecutive events dating back to April 2015. Over that time frame, the girls have finished first overall in five events, including two consecutive events. The lineup has also finished second overall on four occasions.

The Warriors tallied a third-place finish in the Novice Fours, as the squad posted a time of 8:09.15. The team's lineup for the event consisted of sophomore coxswain Hillary Farrell (Jefferson, Mass.), junior stroke Amy Wengefeld (Old Saybrook, Conn.), freshman third seat Rebecca Cleary (Milford, N.H.), freshman second seat Emily Crowe (Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Ashley Augulewicz (Beverly, Mass.) on the bow.
