Men's Tennis Edges Adelphi, 6-3, in NE-10 Final Rematch Saturday

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior captain Miguel Belfort (Caracas, Venezuela) and sophomore Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) won at both doubles and singles on Saturday as the Merrimack College men's tennis team won its Northeast-10 Final rematch with Adelphi University, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon from North Andover High School.

How It Happened
Doubles action opened up with Merrimack taking second and third by identical 8-1 scores, with the pairs of Belfort/Vega and junior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Clontz (Naples, Fla.) only needing nine games apiece to put away their opponents.
Sophomore Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) and redshirt-freshman Laurence Akwei (Johannesburg, South Africa) led at No. 1, but Adelphi's top combination battled back for the 9-8 victory.
During singles, the Warriors' depth prevailed as Merrimack won at No. 3-6 despite falling at the top two steps of the ladder. Vega won his opening set, 6-2, before his opponent retired in the second frame. Belfort dropped his opener at No. 4, but rallying back to win the final two sets by the same 6-3 final.
Akwei won his first set in a tiebreak at No. 5 before surging forward in the second set, 6-1. Freshman Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) slotted into his regular spot at sixth singles, winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-2).
