Women's Rowing Compiles Strong Day 1 Performance at Knecht Cup Saturday

WEST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. – The Merrimack College women's rowing team compiled a successful opening day at the Knecht Cup, as the team will compete in the finals of the Women's Club Four and the petite final of the Women's Frosh/Novice Four on Sunday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.

How It Happened
The Warriors' competed in the first heat during the preliminaries of the Club Four event, as the squad posted a time of 8:19.10 and finished in third place out of seven teams. The Navy and Gold relied on its tremendous lineup of sophomore coxswain Jess Khoury (Bay Shore, N.Y.), senior captain and stroke Aubrey O'Neill (Pawcatuck, Conn.), senior third seat Lydia Staschke (Guilford, Conn.), sophomore second seat Tasha Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) and junior Lauren Blazon (Lowell, Mass.) on the bow.
The group performed admirably, as it finished ahead of Philadelphia University and Mercyhurst University. Both teams were ranked ahead of Merrimack going into this weekend. The Warriors tallied the fifth-best time of any team in the preliminary round, which earned the squad a spot in the finals on Sunday.
The Warriors turned to a lineup featuring sophomore coxswain Hillary Farrell (Jefferson, Mass.), freshman stroke Rebecca Cleary (Milford, N.H.), junior third seat Amy Wengefeld (Old Saybrook, Conn.), freshman second seat Emily Crowe (Ridgewood, N.J.) and freshman Ashley Augulewicz (Beverly, Mass.) on the bow for the Frosh/Novice Four event.
The girls compiled a time of 9:03.39 and finished in third place during the fourth heat of the preliminary-round race. The third-place finish earned the Warriors a spot in the semifinals, as the group trimmed its time down to 8:51.81 and finished fourth overall in the second heat. The impressive time pushed the Warriors into the petite final, which will take place on Sunday.
