Women's Rowing Competes in Opening-Day Action at the Dad Vail Regatta Friday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Merrimack College women's rowing team competed in a pair of qualifying races during the Women's Varsity Eight Division II event on Friday at the Dad Vail Regatta, as it prepares to take part in the petite final on Saturday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

How It Happened
For the Women's Varsity Eight Division II event, the Warriors turned to a lineup featuring sophomore coxswain Jess Khoury (Bay Shore, N.Y.), sophomore stroke Tasha Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand), senior seventh seat Lydia Staschke (Guilford, Conn.), senior captain and sixth seat Aubrey O'Neill (Pawcatuck, Conn.), freshman fifth seat Ashley Augulewicz (Beverly, Mass.), junior fourth seat Amy Wengefeld (Old Saybrook, Conn.), junior third seat Megan Lacombe (Middletown, Conn.), junior second seat Lauren Blazon (Lowell, Mass.) and senior captain Mara Payne (Sandwich, Mass.) on the bow.

In the opening heat during the initial qualifying race, the girls tallied a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:12.555. Barry University tallied a first-place finish in the heat with a time of 6:53.113, as it clinched a spot in the grand final on Saturday. Nova Southeastern University, Florida Tech and Merrimack finished second, third and fourth, respectively, as the three teams earned a spot in a second qualifying race, which took place on Friday afternoon.

In the second qualifying race, the Warriors needed to finish in the top-four in order to qualify for the grand final on Saturday. The Warriors barely missed out on clinching a spot in the grand final, as the group tallied a fifth-place finish with a time of 7:20.858. The time trailed fourth-place Florida Tech by 3.539 seconds.

The Navy and Gold will compete in the petite final on Saturday in order to determine places seven through 10. The group will be competing against UC San Diego, Charleston and Philadelphia University.
