PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Merrimack College women's rowing team recorded a second-place finish out of four teams in the petite final of the Women's Varsity Eight Division II event on Saturday during day-two action at the Dad Vail Regatta. The Warriors finished in eighth overall during the Varsity Eight event at Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Basics
Event: Dad Vail Regatta
Location: Schuylkill River | Philadelphia, Pa.
What They Said
Head Coach David LeFebvre: "We placed second in the petite final for eighth-place overall. While this was never our goal, we can be extremely proud of these Warriors. They raced with grit and heart. More than half of our squad missed practice due to illness in the last two weeks. Our first practice with the full lineup was the day we arrived in Philadelphia. We just did not have enough gas in the tanks to race hard three times in two days. A small consolation was that we bettered our No. 10 seed and defeated all but one crew from our region."
How It Happened
For the second consecutive day, the Warriors turned to a talented lineup of sophomore coxswain Jess Khoury (Bay Shore, N.Y.), sophomore stroke Tasha Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand), senior seventh seat Lydia Staschke (Guilford, Conn.), senior captain and sixth seat Aubrey O'Neill (Pawcatuck, Conn.), freshman fifth seat Ashley Augulewicz (Beverly, Mass.), junior fourth seat Amy Wengefeld (Old Saybrook, Conn.), junior third seat Megan Lacombe (Middletown, Conn.), junior second seat Lauren Blazon (Lowell, Mass.) and senior captain Mara Payne (Sandwich, Mass.) on the bow.
The group posted a time of 7:31.769 in the petite final of the Varsity Eight event, as it claimed second-place honors in the specific event. The time trailed first-place UC San Diego by 4.734 seconds, while it cleared third-place Philadelphia University by 14.661 seconds.
