Two 90th-Minute Goals Stump Women's Soccer; Warriors Fall at Saint Michael's, 2-1
Links: Box Score
COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Merrimack College women's soccer scored what looked like would be the game-winning goal with just four minutes remaining, but saw Saint Michael's net two goals in the final minute of the game as the Warriors were stumped by the Purple Knights by a score of 2-1 in Vermont on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
Score: Saint Michael's 2, Merrimack 1
Records: Merrimack (2-1) | Saint Michael's (1-2)
Location: Doc Jacobs Field | Colchester, Vt.
How It Happened
- First Half – The opening frame of what was the first Northeast-10 Conference game for both teams saw a lot of offensive action as both squads look to nab their first conference win of 2016. The teams would combine for 18 shots in the first half, including seven on net, but neither side would be able to take a lead early in the contest.
- 86' – The scoreless streak in Saturday's game would not be broken until the 86th minute when the Warriors were able to get out to a 1-0 lead. A corner kick for Merrimack would eventually end up in the net as junior Jorgi Adee (Whitinsville, Mass.) would find fellow junior Victoria Carter (Smithfield, R.I.) after a skirmish in front of the net. Carter was able to knock the ball into the right side of the net for what seemed could potentially be the deciding goal.
- 90' – The Purple Knights would score their first goal of the contest in the game's final minute, and like Merrimack would net it off of a corner kick. The corner deliviery would be volleyed from the far post back to the near post where it was headed in to tie the game late and give Saint Michael's the momentum.
- 90' – Just 20 seconds after the Purple Knights tied the game in the final minute, Saint Michael's would net the game-winner in similar fashion to their first goal, as a header would find the back of the net to put Saint Michael's up by one with just 26 seconds remaining in the game. The Warriors would be unable to recover from the second Purple Knight goal, as they eventually fell by a score of 2-1
Inside The Numbers
- After outshooting the Purple Knights by a margin of 10-8 in the first half, the Warriors offense was thwarted in the second half, managing just one shot, including Carter's lone goal of the game for Merrimack.
- Carter continues her hot start to her junior campaign as her goal on Saturday is now her third of the season, netting a goal in each of the Warriors first three games. Those three goals are tied for third in the NE-10, while her assist she has added already has her at seven points on the year.
- Junior goalkeeper Molly Meehan (Fairfield, Conn.) made seven saves in Saturday's conference matchup. The total fall just one shy of her career-high of eight.
- Shots: MC – 13 // STM - 15
- SOG: MC – 5 // STM - 9
