NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Despite an impressive 18-save game effort in net for freshman Katharina Ohmen (Bremen, Germany) in just her second career start, the Merrimack College field hockey team fell to No. 7 LIU Post on Saturday afternoon in overtime by a score of 2-1.

The Basics
Score:
#7 LIU Post 2, Merrimack 1
Records: Merrimack (0-4, 0-1 NE-10) |
#7 LIU Post (4-0, 1-0 NE-10)
Location:
Martone-Mejail Field |North Andover, Mass.

How It Happened

  • 27' – After Ohmen started the game impressively for the Warriors, making eight saves in the opening 20 minutes, the Warriors would get their first quality scoring opportunity of the half as sophomore Mary McNeil (Canton, Mass.) would utilize a spin move to get a clean look but was stoned on a nice save from the keeper.
  • 39' – Following a scoreless first half, LIU Post would take the first lead of the game just four minutes in to the second frame. The Pioneers would display some smooth touch passing off of their 21 penalty corners in the game to find the back of the net and make it 1-0.
  • 47' – Less than 10 minutes after LIU's first goal, it appeared the Warriors would tie it up on a nice chance for junior Taylor Simpson (York, Maine). Simpson would manage to get a shout around the keeper from close range, but the ball would just miss sneaking inside the far post and go wide, keeping the Warriors scoreless
  • 56' – Merrimack's game-tying goal would come with 14 minutes remaining in regulation. Following a scrum in front of the net, the ball would shoot out to senior Nicole Bradley (Essex, Mass.) who would put the ball in the back of the net for her first of the season to put the score at 1-1 late.
  • 73' – The Warriors nearly won the game early in overtime as McNeil and junior Rylie Hammond (Phillipston, Mass.) would speed up field for a 2-on-1 opportunity, but were unable to convert on the great chance.
  • 84' – LIU Post's game-winner came with just over a minute until the clock expired on the first overtime. An accurate pass across the face of the net would find a Pioneer player wide open, giving Ohmen little time to come across the goal as a diving effort would not be able to stop the shot.

Inside The Numbers

  • Bradley's goal is the first for her this season after netting three in 2015. It's the senior's first goal since her heroics in the 2015 NCAA Semifinal that sent the Warriors to their first Championship appearance.
  • In just her second start, Ohmen was able to rack up an incredible 18 saves in the game, setting an early career-high that may prove tough to beat in the coming years..
  • Simpson fired off a team-high three shots in the game as she continues to look for her first score of the season..
  • Shots: MC – 10 // LIU - 30
  • SOG: MC – 5 // LIU - 21
