#4 Field Hockey Topped by Bentley, 2-1

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Despite dominating the game on the offensive side of the ball and racking up scoring opportunities, the No. 4 Merrimack College field hockey team fell to Bentley University on Wednesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field by a score of 2-1 in what was a non-conference game.

How It Happened

  • 10' – Merrimack would get the first scoring opportunity of the game for either side with a penalty corner 10 minutes into the game. Sophomore Delaney Yule (Southbury, Conn.) would fire off a shot that would be saved, followed by two rebound shots from Merrimack , but those would also be turned aside in a strong start to a great game from Bentley's keeper Evelyn Schaedel.
  • 21' – Yet another corner would come for the Warriors just over 20 minutes into the contest, taken by senior Hannah Magerman (Franklin, Mass.). After delivering the pass, the ball would find it way back to Magerman who tried to slip the ball inside the near post, but missed a gola by just inches.
  • 24' – Bentley would take the first lead of the game after a hard shot from distance would sneak through a few defenders a find the stick of a Falcon in front of the net. The ball would deflect of the stick and go up and over the shoulder of junior goalkeeper Kayla Raneri (Reading, Mass.) to put the Falcons up 1-0.
  • 48' – The Warriors would tie the game back up at 1-1 just over 12 minutes into the second half thanks to the first goalof the season from 2015 All-American and sophomore Mary McNeil (Canton, Mass.). McNeil would use some slick stick-work to maneuver past multiple defenders and get in close, where she capitalized on the opportunity and put the Warriors on the board.
  • 53' – Just five minutes later, Bentley would retake the lead on one of their few opportunities in the game, as yet another deflected shot would find its way into the back net after a hard misdirection with just 17:49 remaining in the game.
  • Final 10 – The Warriors heavily picked up their offense in the final 10 minutes of the game as they sensed timed running out. The Warriors would fire of five quality shots in the final 10, as well as taking six penalty corners in the final 17 minutes after Bentley regained the lead. Despite the impressive effort and shot totals for the Warriors, they numbers would not be enough as they would be held from snagging a second goal and tying the game up late.

Inside The Numbers

  • The Warriors offense looked impressive in the outing against Bentley, dominating every offensive category on the stat sheet except for the most important number: goals. Goalkeepers Evelyn Chaedel and Jana Mones combined to make 16 saves in the duration of the games, including a few shining toe saves.
  • Freshman Jessica Palmer (Milford, Mass.) played well in her second-career game as a Warrior, showing determination to pick up her first-career goal. She fired off three shots in the game, all of which were on net and had great chances of going in if not for better saves.
  • With an assist on Wednesday, sophomore Delaney Yule (Southbury, Conn.) is now just one assist away from matching her season totals from last year just two games in to 2016.

The Warriors will go for their first win of the season next Wednesday, September 14 when they travel to Stonehill for their first road game of 2016 in Easton, Massachusetts. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
