The Turning Point:
The final 2:25 of game action saw the Golden Knights collect 13 unanswered points, transforming an eight-point deficit into what proved to be a four-point win. Chris Dorgler's layup with 12 seconds remaining served as the game-winning shot. Defensively, Saint Rose forced Merrimack into three turnovers and three missed shots during the stretch.
How It Happened (First Half)
- After neither team led by more than three points over the first 5:32 of the game, the Warriors used a 5-0 spurt that featured a right-wing 3-pointer from sophomore Ryan Boulter (Mansfield, Mass.) and a layup from redshirt-junior Tawayne Anderson Jr. (Garden City, N.Y.) off a feed courtesy of freshman Juvaris Hayes (Paterson, N.J.) to give the Warriors an 18-14 lead
- Freshman wing Jaleel Lord (Jersey City, N.J.) came off the bench to have a big first half. His second triple went down at the 8:26 mark, giving the Warriors a 30-26 advantage and putting the first-year reserve in double figures with 10 points. An and-one conversion for Hayes two mintues later make it a six-point lead, 34-28, for the Navy and Gold
- With under six minutes left, the Golden Knights went from man-to-man defense to a zone, but Lord's third triple of half hit bottom to put the Warriors ahead, 37-30. Two minutes later Lord's fourth trey went down – giving him a season-high 16 points – and put the Warriors ahead by double figures, 40-30
- Consecutive triples from junior Kyle Howes (Maynard, Mass.) and Boulter increased the Warriors' advantage to 14 – their largest of the half – with 2:43 to play. From there, however, the Golden Knights ended the opening stanza on a 11-3 run that featured a banked-in 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Merrimack's lead to six, 49-43, at halftime
How It Happened (Second Half)
- Before the Warriors used their first timeout of the half with 16:13 remaining, the hosts scored six of the half's first eight points to make it a 51-49 game. Graduate forward Anthony Barry (Uxbridge, Mass.) attacked the basket for two out of the timeout to increase the advantage to four
- Tyler Sayre's third field goal of the second half tied the game at 53-all, but Boulter canned a left-wing 3-point on the other end of the floor to give Merrimack the lead back with under 14 minutes remaining. Three minutes later, Sayre converted a three-point play to give the Golden Knights their first lead since the opening minutes, 60-59
- A 7-0 Warriors' run turned a 63-61 deficit into a 68-63 lead. Lord answered a Saint Rose triple with his fifth three of the game to extend Merrimack's lead to five, 71-66.
- A few minutes later, Sayre continued to keep the Golden Knights' in it, with his elbow jumper going through the net with 4:47 to play and the Navy and Gold's lead down to one, 74-73. On Merrimack's next possession sophomore Troy McLaughlin (Old Tappan, N.J.) kicked to Boulter for a corner triple, increasing the lead to four
- The shot started a 8-0 Warriors run that ended with another triple off the right-handed shot of Boulter. With 2:25 remaining, Saint Rose fought back with six unanswered points of its own to bring the deficit to two, 82-80, with 52.8 seconds remaining. The Golden Knights extended it to eight straight, creating a turnover and converting on the fast break to tie the game
- Saint Rose's final four points came in the final 15 seconds. After calling timeout with 16.4 remaining, the Warriors turned the ball over on the inbounds pass, resulting in the game-winning lay-in for Dorgler.
Inside The Numbers
- Lord's 19-point outburst came after the rookie missed three games due to injury and had scored just two points over his last five appearances. Outside of a missed desperation triple at the buzzer, he made all seven of his field-goal attempts including a season-high five 3-pointers
- Barry put together his third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 caroms. He now needs just eight more boards to become the 17th player in program history to reach 500. He inched closer to 1,000 points as well, as the fifth-year player now has 961 career points
- For the second straight year, Sayre notched a 30-point effort against the Navy and Gold. He led all scorers with 32 points on 12-of-20 shooting. Three other Golden Knights scored in double figures
- Hayes finished one point shy of yet another double-double, registering nine points and 14 assists. The 14 dimes fell two short of his season high, increasing his season average to 9.1 assists per game
- Boulter matched Lord with five triples. As a team, the Warriors knocked down 14 from beyond the arc, the second most 3-point field goals this season for the Warriors
