Women's Soccer Downs Owls in Double Overtime

NEW HAVEN, CONN. –Merrimack College women's soccer junior Gigi Guenther (Webster, Mass) sent the Warriors to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Southern Connecticut State, on Tuesday night in NE10 action. Senior Sarah Boucher (Northbridge, Mass.) sent a free kick to the head of Guenther in the box, who was able to find the back of the net at 106:09 of the game.

How It Happened
  • Sophomore keeper Erin Fulton (Farmington, Conn.) made two early saves in the first 10 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless.
  • 34' – Fulton made another save, as Victoria Buonanni cut back to the middle of the field, firing a shot just outside the box to the far post. Merrimack had just two shots on net in the opening half, both coming from about 30 yards out.
  • The Owls came close to taking the lead in the 55th minute. Johanna Wahlen took a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar and bounced away from danger.
  • Merrimack juniors Tori Daigle (Dayton, Maine) and Taylor Cogliano (Bellingham, Mass.) each had shots that went just wide of the net in the 61st and 64th minutes, respectively.
  • Boucher sent a drive from 30 yards out that as saved, before classmate Jorgi Adee (Whitinsville, Mass.) sailed a shot just over the cross bar from 20 yards away.
  • 84' – The Warriors had a golden opportunity to take the lead. Following a corner kick, junior Guenther sent a header towards the net. However, an Owl defender was there to block the shot and get it away from danger.
  • Daigle had a last chance opportunity in regulation with three seconds left, but her sliding shot attempt was blocked at the six-yard line. With 19 seconds left in the first overtime, Daigle again threatened with a shot. It was turned away by the keeper.
  • 107' - Following a free kick, Boucher sent a ball into the box, where it found the head of Guenther. She knocked it into the net for the overtime victory.
Inside The Numbers
  • Guenther has scored four goals in the last three games and now has five on the season. It is a career-high for her.
  • Boucher has her sixth assist of the season and fourth straight game with one.
  • Fulton made five saves in her second-career shutout. The Warriors limited the Owls offense to just three shots after the first half.
