PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team could not overcome the first period deficit, eventually falling to No. 10/10 Providence, 5-0, in Hockey East action from Schneider Arena on Saturday night.

Rapid Recap:
- Both teams traded shots early in the first five minutes of the game, but the goaltenders stood tall. Sophomore Léa-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Quebec) made a pair of saves in the opening minutes, including a breakaway chance for the Friars to keep the game scoreless.
- Junior captain Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.) redirected a shot taken from the point just in front of the net, nearly giving Merrimack a 1-0 lead just over two minutes gone in the first.
- However, the Friars scored at 9:05 of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Warriors got a power-play chance of their own with six minutes left in the first.
- Providence had a 15-6 advantage on shots in the opening period.
- The Warriors had a quality chance in the opening minutes, as junior Katelyn Rae (Courtice, Ontario) took a shot from the left dot. Classmate Annie Boeckers (Otsego, Minn.) followed up the rebound with a quick shot from the slot.
- The Friars had the puck in their offensive zone, but Demers made a save, along with a pair of blocked shots by junior Felila Manu (Anchorage, Alaska) with just over 13 minutes to go in the second period.
- Sophomore Mikyla Grant-Mentis (Brampton, Ontario) received a stretch pass, beating the Providence defense. Her shot was saved, but she was held on the play, giving the Warriors a power-play with just under eight minutes to play in the second.
- Providence extended its lead with 2:40 to go in the second frame, before tacking on a third goal with 58.5 seconds to play in the second.
- Merrimack had a power-play at 2:12 of the third, putting four shots on net. However, the Warriors couldn't find the back of the net.
- Providence added a power-play goal with 11:19 to go in the third. The Friars tacked on another goal with 10:07 gone in the third for a 5-0 lead.
Scoring Summaries
- Providence took a 1-0 lead at 9:05 of the first period. The initial shot by Maureen Murphey looked like it was stopped, but the puck had just enough to go over the line.
- On a delayed penalty, Chloe Gonsalves sent a pass up the boards to Madison Sansone. Sansone gave the Friars a 2-0 lead, lifting a wrist shot to the upper right post at 17:20 of the second.
- On the ensuing power-play, Providence scored on a shot by Cassidy MacPherson that clanked off the pipe and into the net at 19:02.
- Providence added a goal at 8:41 of the third on the power-play. A pass back and forth between Whitney Dove and Avery Fransoo, lead to a one-timer by Dove. Â Another goal was added with 9:53 left in the third frame by Blair Parent.
