Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Exhibition at Providence Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second consecutive year, the Merrimack College women's basketball program went up against a Division I opponent, challenging Providence College in an exhibition from Alumni Hall on the campus of the Friars on Saturday. Facing a Warriors' starting lineup that featured a pair of freshmen, Providence pulled away from Merrimack for a 73-32 triumph.

The Turning Point:
The Friars caught fire from beyond the arc in the second quarter, hitting 6-of-7 from three-point land to create distance between themselves and the Warriors.

  • Sophomore Alyssa Torres (Bohemia, N.Y.) and freshman Marissa Gattuso (Woburn, Mass.) each hit their opening shots of the first quarter. Providence hit 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, however, to open a 17-5 lead after 10 minutes
  • Freshman Mayson Kimball (Webster, N.H.) and junior Karlee Alves (Ellington, Conn.) got going from distance in the second, hitting Merrimack's first triples of the day. A 14-3 run for the hosts enabled Providence to increase its lead to 40-13 entering halftime
  • The third quarter saw Merrimack mount a quick 5-0 spurt, with Kimball feeding sophomore guard Giulia Orlando (Haverhill, Mass.) to start the stretch followed by junior Lindsay Werner (Groton, Mass.) hitting her first three of the day
  • Merrimack kept the final 10 minutes at a six-point margin, 14-8, with Providence prevailing by a 73-32 final
Notes and Notables
  • Merrimack's Giulia Orlando enjoyed the opportunity to play against her younger sister, Olivia Orlando, who plays her first season at Providence this year
  • Casey, Kimball and Gattuso all suited up for Merrimack for the first time on Saturday. Kimball led the Warriors in scoring and rebounding with seven points and six boards
  • Five Friars scored in double figures, led by 17 points from Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Jovana Nogic who congributed 17 on 6-of-12 shooting
