BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After posting the top time in the 400m preliminary round on Thursday to earn the top seed in the final and top the rest of the field by more than a full second, senior captain Carly Muscaro (Ashland, Mass.) ran the second-fastest time in the 200m preliminary round on Friday evening at 24.01 to earn the second seed when she goes for her first-career 200m national title on Saturday evening at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Basics
Event: 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships
Day 2 Results: Muscaro (200m Prelim - 2nd, 24.01)
Location: CrossPlex Complex | Birmingham, Ala.

How It Happened

  • As she did in the 400m, Muscaro came into championship weekend with the best time in the nation in the 200m dash at 23.60. The USTFCCCA East Region Track Athlete of the Year would easily win her heat, ultimately posting the second-best time in the prelimanry round at 24.01. She would fall just .06 seconds short of the fastest time in the round at 23.95.
  • The fastest time and top seed entering the 200m final on Saturday evening belongs to Sunaya Wahi of Adams State, a new foe to Muscaro that she has not previously seen at her prior nationals appearances. Wahi ran her best 200m time all season in the prelimaries after entering Friday tied for fifth on the year with a time of 24.16
  • Earning the third-seed behind Muscaro is a familiar opponent to the Ashland, Massachusetts native in St. Agustine's Ornella Livingston, who finished third behind Muscaro's runner-up finish in the 200m at the 2016 Outdoor Championships just last spring. Livingston also ran a time of 24.01 in the preliminaries, but was timed a few thousandths of a second behind Muscaro.
  • Muscaro, who did not run in the 200m event at the 2016 Indoor National Championships last season, will look to win the first 200m crown of her career and take home two individual national titles when she runs in the 200m and 400m finals on Saturday evening.

Up Next

Muscaro will look to repeat her national title in the 400m final as well as go for her first-ever title in the 200m tomorrow, with the 400m finals being run at 4:35 p.m., followed by the 200m final 5:20 p.m. She will then be joined by fellow senior captain Olivia Downey (Melrose, Mass.), sophomore Michaela Pernell (Naugatuck, Conn.) and freshman Savanna Spencer (Seabrook, N.H.) to run in the 4x400m relay final at 6:15 p.m. to close out the weekend. All the action can be seen live at www.ncaa.com/liveschedule.
