NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team mustered only two hits as visiting Post University quieted the Warriors' bats on Wednesday afternoon, shutting out the Navy and Gold, 5-0, from the Warrior Baseball Diamond in non-conference play.

Inning By Inning

  • Top 4th – After allowing only two baserunners through three innings and recording the first two outs of the fourth, senior Joe Velozo (Tewksbury, Mass.) loaded the bases on two walks and a single. He recovered, inducing a grounder to third base to end the frame unscathed
  • Top 6th – With the game still scoreless, freshman Joey Porricelli (Monroe, Conn.) hit a bounding ball to the hot corner that connected with the lip of the infield and over Post's third baseman for Merrimack's first hit of the day
  • Top 8th – With one out, a double put a man in scoring position for the Eagles and Post's next batter roped a single down the line in left field to make it a 1-0 game. The next hitter singled to put runners on the corners, which led to Post's second run after a throwing error by the Warriors allowed each runner to advance a base. After a wild pitch moved an Eagle within 90 feet of scoring, Velozo escaped the frame with two putouts from freshman first baseman Thomas Joyce (Newton, Mass.)
  • Bottom 8th – Freshman Nick Shumski (Salem, N.H.) started the inning with a single, but was quickly erased on a double play, which ended the Merrimack threat
  • Top 9th – Post added three insurance runs in its last at-bat, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches and utilizing a two-run double into left field

  • WP: Esposito (2-2) | LP: Velozo (1-1)
  • Velozo has allowed just two earned runs over his last 13 innings, lowering his ERA to 4.33 on the season. The eight innings of work marked a career high for the senior
  • Porricelli's sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 18 games
  • Post starter Enzo Esposito threw seven innings, finishing his day with 125 pitches and only allowing one hit, striking out seven Warriors
