#7 Men's Tennis Suffers 5-0 Defeat at #2 Chestnut Hill in NCAA Opening Round

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Merrimack College men's tennis team woke up on Saturday morning in Philadelphia to play in the program's 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament, earning an at-large bid as the seventh seed in the East Region. The Warriors battled second-seeded and host Chestnut Hill, but the hosts prevailed by a 5-0 margin to advance to the second round on Sunday.

 Match 1: #2 Chesnut Hill def. #7 Merrimack, 5-0
 Match 2: #6 Univ. of District Columbia vs. #3 NYIT – 2 p.m.

 How It Happened (Doubles)

  • No. 1 – At the first flight, senior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) played a back-and-forth match against the top-ranked duo in the East Region according to the Oracle/ITA regional rankings. The Griffins won out in the end, taking an 8-5 match
  • No. 2 – Junior Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) and freshman Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) aimed to salvage one point during doubles, but the Northeast-10 All-Conference duo suffered an 8-5 loss to give the CACC Champions a 3-0 lead entering singles
  • No. 3 – The first match of the day to finish, senior Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) dropped an 8-2 tilt at third doubles

How It Happened (Singles)

  • No. 5 – Slobin was blanked in his opening set before suffering a 6-3 loss in the second frame to give the Griffins their fourth point of the day
  • No. 6 – Chestnut Hill clinched the match at the sixth flight, defeating Sheikh in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) to advance to the second round
  • No. 1-4 singles were in progress upon the completion of the match, with Vega, Belov and Majewski leading in their second sets at first, second and third singles, respectively,
