NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team will look to complete its first game in 10 days on Wednesday afternoon when the Warriors travel to Assumption College for a divisional contest with the Greyhounds beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. The contest was originally supposed to be played on Tuesday, but was pushed back one day to ensure proper playing conditions at Rocheleau Field.

The Basics
Date/Time:
4/5 | 3:30 p.m.
Records: Merrimack (8-10, 0-0 NE Div.)
| Assumption (8-12, 0-3 NE Div.)
Location:
Rocheleau Field | Worcester, Mass.

Last Time Out:

  • Due to darkness, Merrimack was unable to complete its divisional opener last week against Bentley. The game was tied at four-all before being suspended following the completion of the 11th inning. The game will be resumed later this spring
  • Junior PJ Browne (Rutland, Mass.) dazzled over 5.2 innings of work, striking out nine Falcons without allowing a run. Junior Joe Westerman (Maynard, Mass.) and sophomore Cam Monagle (Cambridge, Mass.) combined to throw five innings of scoreless relief – with Monagle eligible to return to the mound when the game resumes – but the Falcons tacked out four runs in the eighth against senior Matt DiNello (Southington, Conn.) to tie the game and force extras
  • A trio of RBI singles and a fielder's choice resulted in Merrimack's four runs, with all four coming in the fifth and six innings. Graduate shortstop Mike Forgione (North Branford, Conn.) knocked in two runs, while senior Paul Buckley (Sacamore Beach, Mass.) added a RBI and a double as part of a three-hit performance
  • Freshman Joey Porricelli (Monroe, Conn.) accounted for the other run-scoring play, while a multi-hit game for sophomore Matthew Ronai (Orange, Conn.) extended the sophomore's hitting streak to 18 games

Last Season vs. Assumption:

  • The Warriors swept the season series with the Greyhounds last season, winning twice at home before wrapping up the series with a road win at Rocheleau Field
  • The first game of the season marked the milestone moment of the year as senior righty Perry Kulaga (Lincroft, N.J.) tossed a no-hitter, striking out seven Greyhounds in the complete-game shutout. It marked the first no-no in program history and the first of the nine-inning variety, as the previous no-hitter was in a game that lasted only seven frames
  • Things got interesting in the middle tilt, as the Warriors held a 7-0 lead after the first inning and led 10-2 entering the top of the ninth at the Warrior Diamond, only to see Assumption score five runs to close the gap to three runs. Ronai and junior Matt Nicholson (Rockland, Mass.) combined for five hits and knocked in four runs on the day
  • The series finale saw the Warriors pound out 15 hits en route to an 11-6 victory. Sophomore Riley Sorenson (Sandwich, Mass.) recorded his second win of the season against Assumption

The Greyhounds:

  • Delayed by one day, Assumption completed a three-game series against Franklin Pierce by playing twice on Sunday and a single game on Monday. The Greyhounds were blanked in both games of the twin bill before a 18-3 loss in the finale
  • Junior catcher Andrew Jaehnig leads the team with a .368 average, with 10 of his team-high 25 base knocks going for extra bases while his three homers are tied for the conference lead
  • Four Greyhounds have made at least three starts this season to establish their four-man rotation. Junior Mike Curtis leads the group with a 3.48 ERA over 31.0 IP. Senior Kevin O'Connor has punched out 30 opponents, the most of any Assumption hurler

Up Next
The Navy and Gold will begin a three-game series with Stonehill on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Mass. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday from Xaverian after three games were rescheduled after being postponed last weekend.
