NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Playing outside for the first time this season at North Andover High School, the Merrimack College men's tennis team avenged Saturday's loss to Franklin Pierce with a 9-0 blanking of Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened (Doubles)

  • No. 1 – Merrimack swept the doubles portion of the match, only combing to lose two games across the three flights. Senior Nick Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) and junior Mikhail Belov (Krasnoarmeyskoy, Russia) bounced back with a 8-1 triumph at the first doubles
  • No. 2 – Second doubles recorded their second win in as many matches as junior Frank Vega (Lima, Peru) and freshman Alex Fedorov (Guilderland, N.Y.) posted an identical margin victory as the first flight, 8-1
  • No. 3 – Senior Tayyab Sheikh (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Slobin (Fairfield, Conn.) surged forward at third doubles, posting a dominant 8-0 victory to complete the sweep

How It Happened (Singles)

  • No. 1 – Vega played up at the first flight for the second time this spring, and made quick work of the Purple Knights' top option, 6-1 and 6-1
  • No. 2 – Belov moved down a flight to second singles, and also won in straight sets (6-1, 6-2)
  • No. 3 – Majewksi recorded his second straight-set win at third singles in as many days, needing only 14 combined games (6-1, 6-1) to dispatch his adversary from Saint Michael's
  • No. 4 – Fedorov improved to 6-0 in NE10 singles and is 9-3 overall this season at the fourth flight by notching a 6-1 win in the opening set before closing the match with a shutout (6-0) in the second
  • No. 5 – Sheikh played at fifth singles for the seventh time this season and picked up his first win by rallying to triumph in three sets. He dropped the opener, 7-5, before using a 6-2 second-set victory to force a third set. In that frame, playing to 10 points, Merrimack's senior won by a six-point margin (10-4)
  • No. 6 – Senior James Hook (Lynnfield, Mass.) entered the singles lineup on Sunday for the first time in his career in NE10 play, and picked a two-set victory (6-2, 6-0)
