NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team begins the 2017-18 year with an exhibition contest on Friday night against the Whitby Wolves at 7 p.m. at Lawler Rink. There regular season kicks off on Saturday, when the Warriors travel to face Boston University for a 3 p.m. puck drop at Agganis Arena.
2016-17 Recap:
- The Warriors had a great year in their second season of existence. They improved on their overall record, finishing with an 11-22-3 record and a 7-17-0 Hockey East record.
- The Warriors made their first-ever trip to the Hockey East Tournament last year, facing Boston College.
- Sophomore Mikyla Grant-Mentis (Brampton, Ontario) returns as the leading scorer for the Warriors, finishing with a stat line of 9g-18a-27p. Junior Katelyn Rae (Courtice, Ontario) led the team with 18 goals and added seven assists.
- Junior Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.) finished second on the team in points with 26. She was also tied for 17th in Hockey East action with 20 points (12g, 8a).
- The Warriors have dual-action between the pipes, returning junior Samantha Ridgewell (Outlook, Saskatchewan) and sophomore Léa-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Quebec). Both split time, with Demers starting 23 times and Ridgewell made 13 starts.
Last Season vs. Boston University:
- The Terriers and Warriors faced each other three times, with Boston University. taking the first two games.
- However, the Warriors picked up their first-ever win against the Hockey East foe on Jan. 28 with a 4-1 victory. Grant-Mentis had her first-career hat trick at Lawler Rink to lead the way. Rae added a short-handed goal late in the game.
The Terriers:
- Boston University finished last year with a 19-12-6 record and 12-8-4 in Hockey East action, losing to Northeastern in the Hockey East Semifinals.
- Victoria Bach led Hockey East with 49 points on 26 assists and 23 goals last season. Mary Parker had 45 points, leading the team with 24 goals.
- Erin O'Neil returns in net, after starting nine games last year.
The Whitby Wolves:
- Merrimack hosted the Wolves in their inaugural season, defeating Whitby 4-2 victory back on Sept. 25, 2015 in an exhibition game.

The Warriors will continue its road trip to start the season with a trip to Minneapolis for a pair of games against Minnesota on Friday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 1. Friday's contest has an 8 p.m. puck drop.
