NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's ice hockey team had an early lead, but No. 2/2 Boston College was too much, as the Eagles defeated the Warriors, 7-3, on Tuesday afternoon from Lawler Rink in Hockey East play.

Rapid Recap:
  • Merrimack struck in the first period at 1:20. Sophomore Mikyla Grant-Mentis (Brampton, Ontario) had a breakaway chance and beat Katie Burt on the low glove side of the net.
  • BC scored twice midway through the first to take the lead. The first goal came at 7:58, with the go-ahead goal coming at 8:39. The Warriors had a power play at 12:41 of the first, but sophomore Lea-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Quebec) came up with a kick save on an Eagles breakaway chance. Boston College finished the period with a 12-9 edge in shots.
  • The second period was a scoring frenzy for both teams.  The Eagles went ahead 3-1 early in the second, before the junior Katelyn Rae (Courtice, Ontario) scored at 8:01 on a power play for Merrimack, as the score was 3-2. Three more goals were scored from 11:19 to 14:08 of the second period as the teams skated into the intermission with a 5-3 Boston College lead.
  • A power play goal at 3:12 of the third extended the Eagles lead to 6-3. A goal at 15:44 by Boston College rounded out the scoring for the 7-3 final.
Scoring Summaries
  • The Warriors struck first at 1:20 of the first on a breakaway goal by Grant-Mentis. The forward intercepted a pass in the defensive end, skated the length of the ice, before beating Eagles goalie Katie Burt on the glove side.
  • Boston College scored at 7:58 to even the game on a goal by Kenzie Kent. Delaney Belinskas passed the puck to Caitrin Lonergan down by the goal line. Longergan sent a pass across the crease to Kent, who one-timed a shot into the net to tie the game.
  • The Eagles extended their lead at 8:39 of the period. Daryl Watts broke down the left side of the ice, before feeding Makenna Newkirk in the slot. Newkirk stuffed the puck underneath the pads of Demers.
  • Watts scored at 6:18, scooping up her own rebound and finding the back of the net.
  • Rae made it 3-2 at 8:01 of the second period. Junior Paige Sorensen (Plymouth, Minn.) passed the puck down low to classmate Paige Voight (St. Michael, Minn.), who took a shot on net. Rae was right in front to put away the rebound.
  • At 11:19 of the second, Watts scored while the Eagles were shorthanded to make it 4-3.
  • Grant-Mentis scored her second goal of the game, skating through the slot and beating Burt to the upper corner.
  • Watts scored her second goal of the game at 14:08 of the second to extend the Eagles lead to 5-3.
  • Caitrin Lonergan put Boston College ahead 6-3 at 3:12 of the third period. She received a pass from Watts from behind the net, before one timing the shot into the back of the net. Lonergan made it 7-3 late in the third.

  • Grant-Mentis has registered a point in the last five games (5g, 1a). Rae has a four-game point streak with three goals and an assist in the last four contests.
  • Merrimack scored its first power play goal since a 5-3 win at Union on November 3, 2017.
