NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After a 7-0 rout against Le Moyne on senior day, the Merrimack College women's soccer team plays host to Southern Connecticut Tuesday, October 16. Tuesday's game under the lights has playoff implications, as the Warriors need a win to stay in the race for a spot in the Northeast 10 Conference Tournament.
Last Time Out:
- The first 25 minutes of the contest were about as even as any game the Warriors have been a part of this season, with both goaltenders making fantastic saves to keep the game level.
- After a pair of outstanding saves from Merrimack starter Megan Langlois, the Warriors counter resulted in a free kick from 30 yards out, and eventually, the first goal of the game. A ball in from senior Emily Maier was misplayed through the six-yard box, and sophomore Katelyn Richardson was placed perfectly for the one-time finish.
- Merrimack nearly doubled the lead in the 50th minute. A ball played out to sophomore Nicole Langlois was rocketed low toward the back corner of the net, but a great save by replacement goalkeeper Shannon Bennison kept the score at 1-0.
- Minutes later, the Warriors tacked on three goals between the 50th and 56th minute. Senior Tori Daigle received a beautiful pass from classmate Taylor Cogliano, and finished a shot just outside the right side of the six-yard box to double the lead.
- Less than two minutes later, sophomore Izzy McDonnell rippled the net on a shot just inside the 18 when she took a pass from Daigle, turned, and finished.
- 65 ticks after that, the fourth goal was netted when Daigle ripped a shot from just outside the 18 that the Le Moyne keeper couldn't stop.
- Goal number five came in the 61st minute. After a collision just outside the 18, Merrimack freshman Erin Tyldesley cleaned up a loose ball and floated a ball into the empty net.
- Two more goals were netted within a span of five minutes. First, Tyldesley netted her second of the game on a beautiful turn inside the box, followed by a shot from her left foot.
- Sixty seconds later, Taylor Robertson broke away from the last defender and was able to finish the shot with ease to make it 7-0.
Mack Facts
- The Warriors haven't put up more than six goals against a Northeast 10 Conference team since 2013, when they scored six against Saint Michael's.
- Senior Gigi Guenther currently ranks seventh in the conference with five assists.
- Five players have hit double-digits in the points category; McDonnell (16), Robertson (14), Guenther (13), Tyldesley (12), and Daigle (12).
- Saturday's contest was a career day for Daigle, as it was the first game where she's tallied two goals and an assist.
Inside The Series:
- Merrimack is 13-5-2 all-time against Southern Connecticut, dating back to 2000.
- Gigi Guenther led the Warriors to a 1-0 win in double-overtime last season, as a header in the 106th minute propelled Merrimack over the Owls on the road.
- The Warriors haven't lost to Southern Connecticut at home since 2002.
Scouting the Owls:
- The Owls enter Tuesday's contest with three straight one-goal losses to Mercy College, Stonehill, and Bentley.
- Their 7-3 record is good for a tie in 5th place among conference teams.
- There isn't one player that has scored over 10 points this season, but giving up just 14 goals through 13 games has put the team in a position to make the NE10 Tournament.
