Women’s Volleyball Falters at AIC in Season Finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Seniors Sofia Basauri, Amanda Cain and Katelynn Marr of the Merrimack College women's volleyball program played in their final matches on Saturday evening, as the Warriors fell to American International College in three sets from Butova Gymnasium. Cain posted a match-high 19 digs, Basauri committed just one error on 25 attacks while Marr led Merrimack with nine kills

Set Breakdown
  • Back-to-back blocks from the freshman combination of Megan Rumenapp and Sophie Meyers brought Merrimack within one, 9-8, early in the opener. With the score tied at 11, AIC won four straight points to take control of the frame. The hosts ended the set on a 5-1 run to claim the first set, 25-15
  • Basauri enjoyed her best portion of the match early in the second set, recording three kills during a 4-0 run that gave Merrimack a 4-2 lead. With the Yellow Jackets ahead 15-10, Merrimack won three straight points to cut its deficit to two. The hosts answered back, however, ending the set on a 10-4 spurt to win, 25-17, and ushered on the third set
  • AIC appeared ready to end the match by winning 15 of 23 points to start the third set, and held a 22-14 lead late in the frame. Merrimack had other ideas; the Warriors won five straight points and staved off a pair of set points to trim their deficit down to two, 24-22. Basauri, Marr, Meyers and freshman Kayla Zinser all notched kills during the run that brought Merrimack within two. Despite the rally, the Yellow Jackets ended the match on their third match point
Top Performers
  • Cain ended the season with one of her best efforts of the year. The team captain and starting libero posted her third most digs (19) in 2018, which was the most over her last eight matches
  • Meyers, Zinser and Marr tied for the team lead with three block assists each
  • Rumenapp totaled 20 assists, her third match of the year with at least 20 helpers
  • Meyers and Zinser were also efficient hitters, combining for seven kills on 14 attacks without committing an error
  • Basauri collected both of Merrimack's aces on the day, finishing second on the team with 8.5 points
Notes and Notables
  • Merrimack's 12 block assists registered as the second highest total for the Warriors this season
  • With Cain's second dig of the day, the senior eclipsed 300 digs on the season to post her first campaign with at least 300
  • Both squads hit their best in the third set: AIC posted a .364 hitting clip while Merrimack notched a .286 hitting percentage with 13 kills and only three errors
