NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Looking for the program's first divisional victory of the season, the Merrimack College women's basketball program continues its two-game road swing on Saturday when the Warriors face Saint Anselm College at 1:30 p.m. at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. The contest marks Merrimack's second-to-last road divisional contest of the first half of the year, with a trip to nationally ranked Bentley looming in two weeks.
Five Things to Know:
- Offensively, the Warriors are off to one of their best starts in recent memory. The program ranks third in the Northeast-10 Conference in scoring offense (75.9 ppg), trailing only the Hawks (78.4) and Bentley (85.4). The program ranks second in 3-pointers made (59) and first in attempts (171), which puts them 11th in makes and ninth in attempts nationwide
- On the other side of the floor, Merrimack is second in the league in steals per game (11.1) and second in blocks per game (5.6). Those efforts are aided individual by senior Karlee Alves – the country's leader in both total steals (34) and steals per game (4.86) – and junior Denia Davis-Stewart, who ranks third nationwide in blocks (31) and blocks per game (4.43)
- Senior Lindsay Werner continues to lead the offense with 18.8 points per game, placing her seventh in the league in scoring. Her 18 triples are also good enough for a top-three ranking in the NE10. Sophomores Alyssa Casey (13.9 ppg) and Mayson Kimball (10.9 ppg) join the captain by averaging in double figures
- Alves facilitates the offense with a team-best and Division II leading 57 assists (8.1 apg). She's posted at least five helpers in every game, and is tied for the team lead with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio
- Head coach Monique LeBlanc is nearing her 100th career win, entering the weekend with 93 career wins. She is aiming to become the third coach in program history to reach the century mark, joining Debbie Cogan (1986-1999) and Ann McInerney (1999-2005)
Series History:
- Saturday marks the 73rd all-time meeting in the series, with the Hawks owning a 46-26 advantage
- Merrimack has a chance to win its first game in Stoutenburgh since the 2013-14 campaign. The last two contests have gone down to the wire, with Merrimack falling by two (59-57) last year, and the previous contest went to double overtime before Saint Anselm prevailed
- Kimball scored in double figures in both games, averaging 13.5 point per contest against the Hawks
