No. 22 Men's Soccer Begins Fall Campaign Against Caldwell University Friday Night

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The No. 22 Merrimack College men's soccer team begins its 2018 season Friday, Aug. 31, in the annual Merrimack Kickoff Classic against Caldwell. The tournament, in its fourth year, sees two other teams (Bentley and Molloy) square off at 4 p.m., before Friday's 7 p.m. nightcap between the host Warriors and Caldwell on Martone/Mejail Field. The Warriors will also play in the Sunday matinée game, slated for 3 p.m. against Molloy.

Last Time Out:
  • The Warriors finished the 2017 season with a 16-3-2 overall record, winning the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for their first conference tournament title in 20 years
  • Merrimack lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Adelphi to Goldey-Beacom, 1-0
  • The program record for wins in a single season (16) was tied last season while losing just one conference game in the regular season
  • Five seniors graduated from last season; four of which were everyday starters for the Warriors

  • Enters 2018 ranked No. 22 in the country; picked in the NE10 Coaches' Poll to finish first in the conference
  • Head coach Tony Martone returns for his 37th year. Martone sits in fifth among active coaches in total wins (379) and is 16th all-time in Division II
  • Eight seniors return for the 2018 season, with Sergio Martinez and Lars Sund being named team captains
  • The Warriors posted 11 shutouts last season, out-shooting their opponents 317-184 and giving up just 13 goals in 21 outings.

  • Merrimack is 4-0 all-time against Caldwell in the Merrimack Kickoff Classic
  • Last year's game saw sophomores Drew Lovely and Filippo Begliardi Ghidini score their first career goals in a 2-0 victory
