Women’s Volleyball Falters vs. Georgian Court in First of Three Matches this Weekend

EASTON, Mass.  – The Merrimack College women's volleyball program suffered a three-set defeat on Saturday afternoon to Georgian Court University from Merkert Gymnasium. The Warriors will have two more matches at the Skyhawks Invitational hosted by Stonehill College, facing Felician College tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. followed by the host Skyhawks at 5:30 p.m.

Set Breakdown
  • The Warriors jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the first frame, only to see the Lions win 22 of the next 29 points to claim a 25-15 set victory
  • Facing an 11-4 deficit, the Warriors used a 7-1 run to pull within on, 12-11. Georgian Court answered with a 9-1 spurt of its own however, to build the advantage back to nine (21-12). The Warriors would not go away, responding with an 8-2 stretch highlight by five different players with kills to make it a 23-20 frame. GCU held on however, 25-21, to move within one set of the match
  • The Lions used a 16-4 run to end the final set, breaking open the frame after the set rested at a 9-6 score through 15 points
Top Performers
  • Freshman Sophie Meyers led Merrimack with five kills on 11 attacks, and did not commit an error. She posted a match-high .455 hitting percentage and tied for the match high with four total blocks
  • Senior libero Amanda Cain led all players with a season-best 14 digs
Notes and Notables
  • Meyers increased her hitting percentage to .414 on the year, which currently leads the NE10. She boasts 14 kills with two errors on 29 attacks through three matches
  • Saturday marked the fourth-ever meeting between Georgian Court and Merrimack. The Lions own a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series

Merrimack returns to Merkert Gym tomorrow to face Felician University (12:30 p.m.) and the hosts Skyhawks of Stonehill College (5:30 p.m.) to conclude the day.
