Field Hockey Handles New Haven Saturday, 4-2

WEST HAVEN, Conn.  – Playing the University of New Haven for the first time in school history, the sixth-ranked Merrimack College field hockey program outshot the Chargers, 54-2, en route to a 4-2 victory on Saturday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action from Dellacamera Stadium. Sophomore Emily McNulty scored her first career goal, and senior Mary McNeil added a two-goal effort to move within one point of becoming the sixth Warriors in program history to record 100 career points.

Scoring Summary
  • MC (1-0) – McNeil got Merrimack on the board first, taking a feed from sophomore Colleen Ellis and potting her seventh goal of the campaign
  • MC (2-0) – Looking for her first goal since her first career game, freshman Juliane Ohmen found just that minutes after McNeil's tally. The rookie forward collected a rebound, and netted her second of the year to double Merrimack's lead less than 10 minutes into the game
  • MC (3-0) – Depsite an onslaught of shots, Merrimack did not score again until 20 minutes later. McNeil moved into the offensive zone, and sunk a hard shot past the Chargers keeper
  • MC (4-0) – As the half just ticked under a minute remaining, McNulty added the Warriors' fourth goal of the first 35 minutes when she finished a setup from junior Lindsay Nolte
  • UNH (4-1) – New Haven's offense broke the shutout 15 minutes into the second half, taking advantage of a loose ball that escaped the Merrimack back line
  • UNH (4-2) – Despite a 29-2 deficit in shots, the Chargers scored again off a deflection with less than 10 minutes to play
Top Performers
  • McNeil delivered her third multi-goal game of the season on a career-high 15 shots, seven of which were on target
  • Juliane Ohmen's eight shots trailed just McNeil for the game high. The rookie bested her previous high by five shots
  • McNulty netted her first-ever tally in her 12th career collegiate game. The Maynard, Mass. native has appeared in all but one game this season for Merrimack, attempting five shots as a reserve forward
  • Nolte set a career high in helpers, with her third of the season. Ellis notched her first assist of the year as she ranks third on the team in points (11)
Notes and Notables
  • RECORD WATCH – McNeil now needs just one point to become the sixth member of Merrimack's 100-point club. Her 35 career assists ranks second in school history, while her 32 career goals are the seventh most in school annals
  • The Warriors' 54 shots shattered their previous season high. Merrimack has now attempted 207 through seven games, which is 62 more than the next closest NE10 opponent (SNHU)
  • The program's current five-game winning streak is the longest since the 2016 squad won five in a row, which including a NE10 Quarterfinal upset of Adelphi
Up Next
Merrimack will have another week between games. The Warriors return to action next Saturday, Oct. 6, when they head to Waltham, Mass. to face Bentley in a 12 p.m. start.
