Women’s Basketball Welcomes Pace to Hammel Saturday

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Starting a stretch that sees the Warriors play four of their next five games at Hammel Court, the Merrimack College women's basketball program continues its run against the Northeast-10 Conference's Southwest Division on Saturday when Pace University arrives on campus for a 1 p.m. tip-off.   

Five Things to Know:
  • The Warriors enter Saturday's contest on the heels of a narrow 70-69 defeat to Southern Connecticut State, a NCAA Tournament qualifier for last season. Pace came out on the winning end of its most recent contest, 90-79, over Southern New Hampshire to pick up its first win of cross-division play. Additionally, the Setters enter Saturday with consecutive wins after losing five of their previous six games
  • Head Coach Monique LeBlanc needs two more victories to become the third school in school history to reach the century mark. The eighth-year head coach began the year with 89 triumphs, and is on track to be the first Merrimack coach in over a decade to reach 100 wins
  • Junior Denia Davis-Stewart became just the fourth player nationwide with multiple 20-rebound games on Wednesday; the starting center posted a season-high tying 20 caroms to go along with 19 points. Davis-Stewart boasts a team-leading six double-doubles on the year, which includes four over her last six games. The Dorchester, Mass. native is among the nation's leaders in blocks per game (4.12) and total blocked shots (62)
  • Senior point guard Karlee Alves is one of three players in the country to average at least eight assists per game, pacing the nation with a 8.7 average. Defensively, Alves is one of the top players in the conference with league bests of 53 thefts and 3.8 steals per game. Offensively, Alves is coming off a 15-point effort against the Owls – equaling her second highest scoring output of the year
  • Overall, Merrimack's offense is led by senior Lindsay Werner. The shooting guard rests on 900 career points, and leads the attack with an average of 16.7 points per contest. Werner needs to average just 8.3 points per game the rest of the season to become the 21st player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. By averaging The sophomore tandem of Alyssa Casey (14.3) and Mayson Kimball (11.4) also average in double figures
Series History:
  • The 30th all-time meeting between Merrimack and Pace will occur tomorrow. The Warriors have 13 wins in the series, compared to the Setters' 16
  • Last season, Merrimack collected a three-point win (62-59) on the road in Pleasantville, N.Y. Casey led the effort with a  double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds
  • Pace's leading scorers in that game – Lauren Schetter (19) and Alexandra Monteleone (18) – both return to this year's squad. The former is s sophomore while the latter is a senior

Merrimack's lone road game for the rest of January will go down on Tuesday night. The Warriors head to Garden City, N.Y., where Adelphi University awaits for a 5:30 p.m. The contest marks a rematch of last year's NE10 Championship First Round game, which Adelphi took from Merrimack.
