Men’s Tennis Wins Pair of Matches to Start Florida Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Merrimack College men's tennis program played a pair of matches on Tuesday in Orlando, Fla., beginning the day with a 6-1 win over Millersville University before defeating Trinity University (TX), 4-3, in the Warriors' nightcap. Junior Paul Weidinger clinched the one-point win over the Tigers – the 17th-ranked program in NCAA Division III – with a three-set triumph at fifth singles.

  • Merrimack won both of the matches played in doubles against Millersville, taking the overall point. Third doubles won by a four-game margin, with freshmen Marshall Wood and Alex Mackay Rodriguez prevailing, 6-2. Merrimack's top duo of junior Denis Davydov and freshman Conrad Koch took the match at the top spot, 6-3
  • Five of the six singles matches went in favor of the Warriors, and all five victories finished in straight sets. Davydov won the top flight, 6-0 and 6-2, to pick up his third straight victory at first singles. Mackay Rodriguez also notched his first singles of the spring at the fourth flight, 6-3 and 6-2
  • Merrimack's other wins came at third, fifth and sixth singles. Junior Alex Fedorov dispatched his opposition at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-3. The reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week, freshman Conrad Koch added only singles win to his resume (6-0, 6-3) at No. 5, while classmate Andre Singer dominated the sixth flight (6-2, 6-1)

  • Once again, the Warriors won twice in doubles to claim the overall point. The Warriors first pairing made it a 2-for-2 day as Davydov and Koch claimed a 6-3 win at the top flight. The pair has won four straight matches over. Second doubles also went in favor of Merrimack as Fedorov and junior Jonathan Garcia prevailed, 6-4
  • Four of the six singles matches went the distance. Davydov increased his singles winning streak to four straight, 6-2 and 6-4, with a triumph at the top flight. Second singles ended next, with Fedorov winning his first set, 6-2, and claiming his 10-point third frame, 10-5, to move Merrimack within a point of the match
  • Trinity gained one point with a win at third singles, but Weidinger's match ended next to give Merrimack the win. The 2018 Northeast-10 All-Conference selection gutted out a three-set win (7-5, 4-6, 11-9) to give the Warriors their fifth win of the season. For Weidinger, it marked his first singles win of the year
  • Merrimack also saw one of its freshman appear for the first time this spring; rookie Hassan El Alami took the court at sixth singles against the Tigers
Up Next
The Warriors will have a single match tomorrow, taking on Florida Tech in Satellite Beach, Fla. on the campus of the Panthers. The match is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m.
