Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep against #17 SNHU on Senior Day

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.  – Needing at least one win to lock up the three seed in the northeast division, the Merrimack College softball program earned its first home conference doubleheader sweep of the season, knocking off #17 Southern New Hampshire twice on senior day. After a thrilling 2-1 victory that lasted 10 innings in game one, the Warriors shut out the Penmen in game two, earning a 3-0 win.

It was the seniors who stole the show Saturday afternoon – Hannah Johnson had the walk-off RBI in game one, and starter Melanie DeAlmeida tossed her second complete shutout game of the season, allowing just four hits on the day in game two.

Rapid Recap (Game One)
  • The Warriors utilized an error in the bottom of the third inning to take the game's first lead. With junior Tiffany Mangiameli on second and senior Hannah Johnson on first, Caitlin McBride hit a ball to the right side of the infield; Johnson slid around the attempted tag, and the throw to first went out of play, scoring Mangiameli to make it 1-0.
  • Southern New Hampshire struck back in the top of the fourth, tying the game before the Warriors picked up an out. After a leadoff triple from Maddy Barone, Olivia Strasser laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, scoring Barone from third.
  • Merrimack scored the game's final run in the bottom of the tenth inning. With Kelly Dovi on third, Johnson delivered a walk-off single to left field, giving the Warriors a 2-1 victory.
Rapid Recap (Game Two)
  • Merrimack scored first, getting on the board in the bottom of the second inning, scoring two runs on an RBI single. After a Lucy Colarusso walk and a Nicole Nanof double, Kelly Dovi knocked a single through the middle, giving the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the sixth. With Mangiameli on third, Caitlin McBride put down a sacrifice bunt to score the game's third run.
