Davis-Stewart Scores 1,000 as Women’s Basketball Earns First NEC Win over Bryant

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. – With her twelfth point of the evening, senior Denia Davis-Stewart added her name to the list of 1,000-point scorers at Merrimack College.  Davis-Stewart finished the night with 20 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks during the Warriors victory over Bryant University.  She became the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 career points.  Freshman Jayme DeCesare and grad student Courtney Clasen both scored career-highs with 18 and 17 points, respectively.  Sophomore Kate Mager also scored in double digits with 10 points on the night.

Rapid Recap
  • The Warriors went up five points early in the first quarter on a Davis-Stewart three-pointer.  Later in the quarter, Merrimack took a lead of seven after DeCesare knocked down a floater in the paint.  Bryant cut the lead to three at the end of the quarter after a jumper by Masey Zegarowski found the bottom of the net.  
  • Merrimack jumped on Bryant right from the start of the second quarter.  The Warriors opened up the frame on an 8-0 run highlighted by two threes by DeCesare and Mager.  The run gave them an 11-point lead.  A Clasen and-one on a fast break gave Merrimack a 17-point lead with just under five minutes to play in the quarter.  Another Clasen layup with just over two minutes left gave Merrimack a 20-point advantage.  The Warriors headed into the locker room with a 22-point lead.
  • In the third, Davis-Stewart scored her 1,000th career point on a three-pointer in the corner off of an in-bounds play.  The shot put the Warriors up 27.  Bryant came storming back to cut the lead to 12 after going on a 10-0 run late in the quarter.  DeCesare finished the quarter on a personal 5-0 run to give Merrimack a 17-point lead.
  •  After going back and forth for the first five minutes of the quarter, Bryant cut the lead to 12 after a jumper by Zegarowski.  Merrimack then brought the lead back up to 15 after another DeCesare jumper.  The Bulldogs cut the lead to nine, but could never get closer than that.
Notes and Numbers
  • Davis-Stewart becomes the second player in the last two years to score 1,000 career points at Merrimack College.
  • Clasen knocked down a season-high seven shots in the win over Bryant.
  • Merrimack scored 40 points in the paint compared to Bryant's 36
