Late Surge Pushes Women’s Basketball Past Wagner

NORTH ANDOVER, MASS. –  The Merrimack College women's basketball team went on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter to give them the 55-44 victory over Wagner College.  Senior Denia Davis-Stewart earned her 19th double-double of the season after scoring a team-high 18 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.  Freshman point guard Jayme DeCesare scored 12 points in the game, including eight straight points in the fourth quarter during the run.  Sophomore Kate Mager chipped in with seven points on the afternoon.

Rapid Recap
  • The Seahawks opened up the game on a 9-2 run highlighted by nine points by Emilija Krista Grava.  Davis-Stewart scored hoops on back-to-back possessions to give cut the Wagner lead to just one.  With just over three minutes left in the quarter graduate student Courtney Clasen cut hard in the lane and hit the layup to put the Warriors up four.  Merrimack took a five-point lead into the second quarter after a DeCesare layup late in the quarter.
  • Clasen scored the first two-points of the quarter almost five minutes into it, to give the Warriors a seven-point lead.  Davis-Stewart put the Warriors up nine with just under three minuities to play in the half.  Merrimack took a nine-point lead into the locker room.
  • In the third, Davis-Stewart knocked down a jumper to give Merrimack a nine-point lead.  The Seahawks 9-0 run to tie the game up at 32.  Mager knocked down a three late in the quarter to give Merrimack a two-point lead heading into the final frame.
  • Freshman Kaylee Thomas gave the Warriors a one-point lead after knocking down a layup after scoring in the lane.  The Seahawks responded by going up three after a Jordan Hobson jumper.  Davis-Stewart hit a jumper to put Merrimack up one.  DeCesare hit threes on back-to-back threes to give the Warriors a seven-point lead late in the quarter.  Merrimack ended up winning the game by 11.

Notes and Numbers
  • Davis-Stewart earned her conference leading 19th double-double in this afternoon's game
  • Merrimack outscored Wagner 28-14 in the paint
  • The Warriors also outscored the Seahawks 21-13 off of turnovers.
