NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team will start a two-game road trip where they will play two games in three days. The Warriors take on Long Island University on Saturday afternoon, then head to Fairleigh Dickinson to take on the Knights, Monday night. Merrimack heads into the new week of Northeast Conference play with a 13-8 record overall.
Five Things to Know:
1. Senior
Denia Davis-Stewart accomplished her biggest career milestone yet. The Dorchester, Mass native became the second player in Merrimack College women's basketball history to score over 1,000 points and pull in over 1,000 rebounds. Davis-Stewart is also only three blocks away from having 100 blocks on the season. A category that she leads the country in. She is averaging 18.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game this season.
2. Sophomore guard
Kate Mager is shooting the long ball at a 44% clip so far this season. She ranks in the top 15 in the country in three-point percentage, only trailing the leader by 6%. Mager is averaging 11.5 point per game this season.
3. Freshman guard
Jayme DeCesare leads the team in assists with 73 on the year. She also ranks second in the conference in assist/turnover ratio with a 2.09. DeCesare has is the only Merrimack freshman to start every game so far this season. She is also coming off of winning the NEC Co-Rookie of the Week award after putting up her career-high of 19 points against St. Francis Brooklyn.
4. Since moving into the starting role freshman
Alana Fursman has averaged 3.8 points per game for the Warriors. She scored her career-high of 14 points against Mount St. Mary's after shooting 4-6 from the field and 2-3 from long range. In her eight starts she is shooting 31% from the field.
5. Long Island is currently 5-15 on the season. The Sharks are coming off a win against Merrimack in their last game. Sophomore Brandy Thomas is leading the Sharks in scoring averaging 15.0 points per game
