BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Merrimack College women's basketball team beat Long Island University 66-63 in a Northeast Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors were led, once again by senior
Denia Davis-Stewart who had 16 points and 17 rebounds in the contest. Davis-Stewart captured her conference leading 18
th double-double of the season. Sophomore guard
Kate Mager was the only other Warrior in double figures during the victory. Mager had 12 points off of 4-9 shooting from the field. Freshman
Kaylee Thomas chipped in with nine points.

- Right before the first quarter media timeout freshman Alana Fursman knocked down a three to give the Warriors a 7-6 lead. Long Island score three quick points out of the timeout, which was erased by a Mager three, tying the score at 10. A Mager jumper tied the game up at 16 heading the second quarter of play.
- Senior Emily Houle started the second quarter scoring for the Warriors after hitting a three. After a Davis-Stewart free throw, the Sharks responded with a three of their own by Ryan Weise. Later on, in the quarter Davis-Stewart knocked down her only three of the game to give the Warriors a one-point lead with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Long Island took a one-point lead into halftime.
- In the third, both teams went back and forth the entire quarter. Freshman Jayme DeCesare hit a step-back three to tie the game at 34. Graduate student Courtney Clasen put the Warriors up two after a steal and layup finish. Later in the quarter Thomas hit a jumper to put Merrimack up two. Each team traded blows for the last four minutes of the quarter. The score was tied at 48 heading into the final frame.
- Mager opened up the fourth with a big three that put the Warriors on top by three. Shyla Sanford responded with a three of her own to tie the game up again. Freshman Diamond Christian went on a 4-0 by herself to put Merrimack up two scores. Thomas knocked down a free throw with 4:45 left to give Merrimack its biggest lead of the game, which was six points. With under a minute to play Long Island hit back to back threes to make the deficit only one. Clasen hit two free throws at the end of the game to help Merrimack win the game by three.
Notes and Numbers
- Houle had her season-high in rebounds with six on the night
- The Warriors scored 23 points off of Shark turnovers
- With the win the Warriors move into fourth place in the NEC standings with a record of 7-4 on the season.
