NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After a four-point Hockey East weekend against New Hampshire, the Merrimack College men's hockey team looks to build more momentum against Connecticut in a home-and-home series set to start Friday afternoon at Lawler Rink.
Five Things To Know
- Freshman Alex Jefferies has quickly become a top scoring threat in Hockey East. He leads the Warriors in all three major scoring categories and is fourth in the nation in shots on goal per game with 4.90. That total also leads all of Hockey East and tops rookies in the NCAA.
- Midseason transfer, Max Newton, made his presence felt in his Warrior debut last weekend. He was the top faceoff option, as he won 24 of his 38 opportunities and potted his first goal of the season Saturday. His .632 success rate at the dot has already catapulted him to the team lead and is ninth best in the country.
- No one has sacrificed his body more this season in college hockey than Declan Carlile. He leads the nation in blocked shots per game with 3.33 and is tied for the team lead overall with 20, although he missed the opening four games. He's also grabbed the team lead in plus/minus with a +4 rating thanks in large part to a +5 performance in Merrimack's weekend set against UNH.
- The 2019-20 season included plenty of uncertainty with the starting goalie job, but a front runner has emerged this winter. Rookie Zachary Borgiel has gotten the nod in four straight games and has appeared in all but one contest so far this season. He's steadily improved his numbers, as he's held the opposition to two goals in three of his last four outings.
- The Huskies have rebounded from a 0-2-1 start to win five of their last 10, which includes a regulation and shootout win over #1 Boston College. Jonny Evans has tallied 14 points to take the team lead in scoring and Jáchym Kondelík's 12 assists top the team as well. Tomáš Vomáčka has started all 13 games in net and has kicked out .913% of the shots he's seen.
