Baseball Falters in Series Opener vs. Bryant

ANDOVER, Mass. – The Merrimack College baseball team played in the program's first Northeast Conference (NEC) game on Saturday, hosting the preseason favorite Bryant University Bulldogs for the first of a three-game series in Andover, Mass. The visitors claimed a 10-0 win in the series opener.

  • Bryant scored six runs over the first two frames to take an early lead. The big hit in the top of the second was a three-run homer for the Bulldogs, that turned a 3-0 game into a 6-0 contest
  • Merrimack threatened to chip into Bryant's lead in the bottom of the third. Junior Ben Nelson and senior Michael Jamele stood in scoring position with one out, but Bryant was able to escape the jam to stay in front
  • The hosts also put two runners on in both the fifth and seventh innings, but were unable to score. Bryant added four runs between the sixth and seventh frames, increasing its lead to 10-0
  • Junior LT Pare and freshman Casey Hegan threw the final 2.1 innings for Merrimack, allowing just one hit and no runs

  • Senior starter Vin Zappulla worked into the sixth inning of his outing, striking out three Bulldogs on the day

  • Sophomore Jake Macchi pinch hit for the Warriors in the eight inning, and hit a single for his first career collegiate base knock
