Men’s Tennis Handles Fairfield Sunday, 5-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Avenging a loss to the Stags earlier this season, the Merrimack College men's tennis team took down Fairfield University on Sunday afternoon at the WAC Tennis Courts, 5-2, to record the program's first non-conference win of the season. The Warriors picked up their second straight win overall, improving to 2-4 on the year. Fairfield dropped to 1-2. 

After winning the doubles point, the Warriors won the first three singles flights that finished to garner the victory. Junior 
Andre Singer clinched the match with a straight-sets triumph at fifth singles

Rapid Recap 
  • The Warriors started the doubles portion of the match with a win at third doubles. Freshman Jan Semerak and sophomore Pedro de Godoy Mancini won easily, 6-1. The Stags won at the top spot, to bring the doubles point down to No. 2. The duo of freshman Aryaan Bhatia and junior Conrad Koch outlasted Fairfield's second pairing, 7-5, to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the match 
  • Semerak started singles with a blanking of Fairfield's top player, 6-0, in the first set. The Stags' player then retired to give Merrimack the win at No. 1. Junior Jonathan Garcia followed with a two-set victory at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-3, moving the Warriors within one point of claiming the match. Singer clinched things shortly after that; the third-year Warrior won his opener, 6-2, before a 6-4 win in his second set 
  • The other three singles matches went a full three sets. Junior Alec Mackay Rodriguez notched the team's final win of the day, recovering from a loss in his first set to win in three at No. 4. He won the middle set, 6-4, before prevailing in a 10-point tiebreaker. Bhatia and Koch each won a set at second and sixth singles, respectively

Merrimack will be off until Wednesday, March 31, when the Warriors visit Trinity College.
