Campanella Prevails Twice for Women’s Tennis at Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Rosemary Campanella of the Merrimack College women's tennis team prevailed at first doubles and won a straight-set singles match on Friday at Brandeis University, headlining the Warriors' effort against the Judges. The hosts won the overall match, however, by a 5-2 margin to improve to 1-1 on the season. Merrimack fell to 2-6 this spring.

Location: Waltham, Mass.

Rapid Recap
  • Merrimack orchestrated a come-from-behind effort to win the doubles point. After losing the second flight, the Warriors' top pairing of Campanella and sophomore Allyson Nerf won in convincing fashion, 6-2, to even doubles at a flight a piece. The team's third duo of graduate student Roberta Marcos and junior Hope Salts emerged victorious in an exciting 12-game match at No. 3, 7-5, to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the match entering singles
  • First singles finished first, where junior Kristina Calistro played in a three-set match. Merrimack's top option won her opener, 6-3, but fell in her second frame as well as in the 10-point tiebreak that evened the match at a point apiece. Campanella responded at third singles, winning two sets easily (6-2, 6-3) to give Merrimack the lead back at 2-1
  • Brandeis evened the score with a two-set win at second singles, 6-2 and 7-6 (6). The Judges also claimed fifth and sixth singles to clinch the match with their third and fourth points of the afternoon. Sophomore Mikaela Johnson Campana battled tough for Merrimack at fourth singles, the last match of the day. The first-year Warrior won her second set, 6-3, to overcome a first-set defeat and force a 10-point tiebreak. A back-and-forth tiebreaker exceeded the 10 minimum points needed to win, but Johnson Campana's opposition edged her, 12-10, to win at No. 4
